Swindon Borough Council have issued a further alert to that soft, flexible, plastic packaging cannot currently be recycled at the kerbside in its blue weighted bags.

Householders are instead asked to place soft plastic packaging in their general waste bin or to check if their local supermarket collects it for recycling instead.

Examples of soft plastics include:

  • Film lids from yogurt pots or fruit punnets
  • Plastic carrier bags
  • Bread bags
  • Delivery bags
  • Cereal liners
  • Multi-pack wrapping
  • Salad, pasta, and rice bags
  • Cheese, fish and meat wrapping
  • Crisps, sweet bags, biscuit and chocolate wrapping
  • Baby, pet food pouches
  • Single use plastic bags

A spokesperson for the council said: "Trials are currently underway in other parts of the country to collect flexible plastic packaging at the kerbside for recycling. Collections will become mandatory in England from March 2027."

Some plastic packaging, such as coffee bags, may contain labelling that states whether they can be taken to a supermarket for recycling.

People can check Recycle Now’s ‘Recycling Locatorto see which supermarkets do this.

Residents can also send certain items of flexible plastic packaging to the recycling company TerraCycle for free, or use one of their public drop-off points.
