A society devoted to Swindon's greatest literary gift to the world has launched a recruitment drive.
Richard Jefferies (1848-1987) is acclaimed worldwide for a career which encompassed everything from exquisite reflections on nature to staunch defences of hard-pressed agricultural workers.
Among other achievements, he has been credited with inventing the term 'wildlife' and producing perhaps the earliest example of post-apocalyptic environmentalist fiction in the form of classic novel After London.
His life and work is celebrated at his birthplace museum at Coate, whose Facebook presence is www.facebook.com/jefferiesmuseum/?locale=en_GB, and by the Richard Jefferies Society, whose website is www.richardjefferiessociety.org/
The society's own Facebook presence is at www.facebook.com/groups/10150129529455538/?locale=en_GB
Society Honorary Secretary Jean Saunders appealed for new members, including people who are members of the Facebook page but have yet to join the society.
She said: "It would be sad to see the Richard Jefferies Society dwindling to a virtual group and we really need some new active members to keep it alive.
"So please consider becoming a member of the Richard Jefferies Society."
The society currently has members all over the world.
