Scrapstore Supports Vulnerable Young People

scrapstore swindonScrapstore Reuse Centre is a registered environmental charity, low cost community resource centre and social enterprise, which collects businesses' redundant re-usable materials otherwise destined for landfill.

Scrapstore transforms ‘Waste Things into Play Things' through art, educational and recreational activities. Working with children, parents, child minders, play leaders, schools, community groups, and many more organisations helping them learn about re-use and recycling.The Scrapstore is an Aladdin’s Cave of creative materials stimulating your imagination and breathing new life into discarded items.

The Scrapstore has received a grant of £2000 from ‘The Midcounties Co-operative Community Fund’ to provide Creative Art and Craft workshops for vulnerable young people age 13-18 years old. The Mid Counties Co-operative Community Fund supports charities and organisations aimed at encouraging community responsibility, developing community capacity and demonstrating co-operative values.

The workshops will benefit the vulnerable young people helping them to increase their confidence and self-esteem,develop their skills and improve their lives.

The workshops will build on the Scrapstore's capacity and bring benefits to the local community by advancing the education of the public and promoting the benefits of all aspects of re-use.

Over the past year the Scrapstore has worked with 19 schools and organisations in Swindon working directly with 4,738 children/young people and 675 adults. The total number of individuals who have benefitted directly from the Creative Art & Craft workshops is 5,413.

Olivia McCann said:  "The funding secured from The Midcounties Co-operative Fund will enable us to provide quality creative art & craft workshops for those young people most in need. We will work with groups in Swindon that support young people who are in education other than at school who are unable to attend mainstream school.
