I lived on Stafford Street from 1942 - 1953 and attended attended Gilberts Hill Infant School
Keith Wilmott
mjlittle1001@hotmail.co.uk
My daughter and son-in-law found your website on the internet: and it has inspired me to put pen to paper and delve into my sub-conscience for a few childhood memories.
I lived at 45 Stafford Street from 1942 - 1953 with my mother, sister Beryl and older brother Stuart, my father being away in the army until 1946.
Some of the characters living in Stafford Street at the time were, Mrs Spencer Mathews who was the local midwife’ Mr Willacombe who owned the butchers shop in Hyde Road. For some reason that I can't remember he always wanted to adopt me and always put a little extra in the rations to 'feed me up.' Mr Lavington owned a barbers shop in Stafford Street, where I was sent to have my hair cut. His daughter June worked upstairs cutting ladies hair.
I attended Gilberts Hill Infant School from the age of four years old until I was eight. I remember we had lessons in the morning and then had to sleep in the afternoon.
I collected Dinky Toys and still do to this day. These were bought for me by my brother Stuart in Spot on Regents Street owned by a Mr and Mrs Garnett. The shop assistant was called Jock.
Mr and Mrs Garnett lived in Kent Road and I always wished that they wanted to adopt me. A childs’ dream, spending all day long playing with Dinky Toys.
Mrs Bell ran the Co-op on Kent road where we bought our rations. Isn't it funny how we always remember our Co-op Number - 8166!
Stuart my brother again bought me my first bicycle from Foxes’ (opposite Beales Café the name of the road escapes me. He also bought our first television from there in 1953 in time for the Coronation. I remember everyone in the street crowding into our living room to watch the tiny screen. As soon as it was installed, the first thing I remember watching was football, England versus Hungary, England lost, some things will never change! Most of our clothes were bought from Humphrey's on Escote Hill, which was owned by two brothers.
When my father came out of the army he went to work at the G.W.R in the Coppersmiths Shop and there he stayed until he retired.
While I could go on for an eternity I have tried to keep my memories of Swindon to a small part of my life having moved to the Wirral in the early 1970s.
My wife and I still return to Swindon once a year for our annual pilgrimage: once a Moonraker, always a Moonraker. The sight and smell of the steam trains, the two penny rush at the Saturday morning pictures, riding my bicycle over the Humpty Dumps, walks along Mill Stream on a Sunday afternoon with my family and best of all, if I was good’ being bought an ice-cream from the farm shop.
Please do contact me! Keith Wilmott, Wirral, Merseyside.

In the 1881 census they were living at 20 Wyvill Lambeth, Surrey, England with daughters Anne L. age 5 and Martha L age1. In May of 1900 (when George died) they were living at 11 HAWKINS STREET, SWINDON with daughters Martha Lily age 22, Vashti Kate age 17, son George age 14 and Ada age 9. I do not know where daughter Anne was living then (probably married). In May, Ada and George were admitted to Barnardo's Organization and in July shipped to Canada. Ada's sister kept in touch with Barnardo's throughtout the years and in 1908 when she reported she had married a ? A have a Fifth birthday card from a girl who lived next door but one from me, Peggy Muzzlewhite, she used to take me to school in '33. I used to spend most of my time in St. Marks rec and Rodbourne rec or train spotting all over the place. I also used to go roller skating at the "Baths", (Was that Milton Rd.?) I remember the fair and fireworks in the park during "fete week". The last of my Grandmothers family, Frank Yates, was living at 479 Ferndale Rd. when he died a few years ago.
Does anyone else remember the same things as me, or even remember me!
I moved to Canada 30 years ago, I suppose there has been a few changes.
