Lydiard Dig report back.
Free lecture on 29 October

Did you take part in the excavations at Lydiard Park this summer? Perhaps you were one of the 200 volunteers who helped Wessex Archaeology in their investigations. Or maybe you were one of the many hundreds of people who came along to watch or talk to the archaeologists as they dug into the history of the eighteenth century park.

These investigations, which are part of the Lydiard Park Project, were to find out as much as possible about the landscape before restoration work begins to restore the park to its former glory. If you were interested in what was going on this summer, there's a great opportunity coming up to hear about the results of all that hard work.

Chris Ellis, Senior Project Officer, Wessex Archaeology, who directed operations, will be giving an illustrated talk on the Lydiard Digs at the Visitor Centre at Lydiard Park, Lydiard Tregoze on Friday 29 October, 7.30pm.

Admission is free however booking is essential. To book a place or to find out more, please call Lydiard House on 01793 770401. Refreshments - hot and cold drinks - will be available at the Visitor Centre café.

Chris Ellis said, "come and find out more about the design of the walled garden, and what went on behind the garden walls! Hear about the mysterious building by the lake - was it a boathouse, a slip-way or a plunge pool? And discover where the long forgotten paths were, now hidden beneath the grass in the park."

This free lecture is part of the Lydiard Park Project - a major restoration project to restore these historic grounds. It is supported by a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Swindon Borough Council's partners in the scheme are English Heritage, The Countryside Agency and business partner, RWE npower.

For more information on the Lydiard Park Project, please contact Lydiard House on 01793 770401.
