Swindon Archive News Help create a green Swindon for tomorrow
Would you like to help turn Swindon's River Ray into a beautiful, wildlife-rich area for people to enjoy? Do you want to help the planet by becoming Swindon's most energy-efficient community - and win a cash prize? Jo Sayers and Ruth Baker of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust will be informing Swindon people about two local projects which YOU can get involved in, at three public consultation evenings: 19th May at Freshbrook Community Centre, Worsley Road, Freshbrook 20th May at Upper Shaw Farm Community Centre, Ridge Green, Shaw, Swindon 21st May at Even Swindon Community Centre, Rodbourne All three events take place between 6.30pm and 8.30pm and are free to attend. Swindon Water for Wildlife Officer, Jo Sayers, will talk about the wildlife of the River Ray. She said, "this event will give local people a chance to be involved, by telling me about what they can see in the area at present, and how they would like to see this vital green corridor improved." Ruth Baker will be talking about climate change and Switch On Swindon, a competition to find Swindon's most energy-efficient community. She explains: "Over a quarter of the world's plants and animals are threatened with extinction due to climate change. But it's not too late. By making your home more energy efficient you can help prevent climate change, reduce your fuel bills by up to a third, and get the chance to win £4,000 for your local community in the Switch On competition." Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is one of the UK's leading nature conservation charities. It has over 16,000 members and supporters, and more than a thousand volunteers, working to conserve the Wiltshire countryside and the rich variety of plants and animals that live there. The Trust owns or manages 2,000 acres of nature reserves that provide havens for plants and animals. It also advises landowners on how to manage their land with wildlife in mind, and comments on structure plans and planning applications that affect sites of wildlife interest. The Trust also actively promotes energy efficiency and waste prevention in the home, community wildlife programmes and environmental education.
