An Open Letter To Swindon Councillors Council

From the Swindon Forest Protection Group (SFPG) Thamesdown News 1994

We're going to DEFEND YOUR PROMISES to us with PRIDE

Dear Swindon Councillor

10 years ago Thamesdown Council made a contract with the people of Swindon - to create a new country park at the Shaw landfill site as part of the Great Western Community Forest. And thousands of council tax payers have been involved in planting some of the 46,000 trees growing on the site.

The council now seems willing to betray the trust people have put in it by considering commercial development of the site with a new stadium for Swindon Town FC and a 'sports village.' This would be a shameful act.

The council's newly published Corporate Plan makes great play of listening to the people and 'Keeping Our Promises with PRIDE.'

One of this council's aims is to: 'Protect the environment and heritage for future generations and ensure environmental and ecological issues are at the heart of decision making.'

Furthermore: 'The Council is leading its work in this area through its Local Agenda 21 Strategy, and making sure its policies, procedures and working practices do not harm the environment, or indeed seek to improve the environment and quality of life for everyone living and working in the Borough.'

So we're going to protect Shaw Forest Country Park with:
  • Passion - because breaking a promise to Swindon's children and grandchildren is unacceptable
  • Respect - for the environment and the people who have dedicated trees to loved ones
  • Integrity - we've got to do it if the council is intent on selling out on a major environmental policy
  • Determination - because we care for our community
  • Energy - to see the future success of the town's latest country park over the next 50 to 100 years

We're appealing to all councillors - STOP ALL DISCUSSION about the development of Shaw Forest Country Park

DO IT NOW before a big campaign of opposition really gets going and draws national attention to more failings by Swindon Borough Council
