National Trust HQ move to Swindon is go after inspirational building receives planning approval

Plans to build a new National Trust headquarters on a brownfield site within the Great Western Railway area have been given approval by Swindon Borough Council's planning committee.

The decision paves the way for the organisation to relocate from its London HQ to a new building designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley. The building will house over 400 employees and be constructed to remain in keeping with the surrounding historic area.

Leader of the Council Mike Bawden is delighted with the decision and had this to say when he heard the news. "This building will be a fantastic addition to the historic railway area and the National Trust a valuable addition to the borough of Swindon. Let us not forget that the organisation could have chosen any number of locations for its new HQ and it chose Swindon. That is something that we should all take great pride in."

The National Trust cited many reasons for relocating to Swindon including the extensive transport links, Swindon's labour market, excellent facilities and beautiful surrounding countryside.

Western Ward member and Leader of the Labour group, Councillor Kevin Small was also pleased with the decision. "I welcome the decision by the planning committee and look forward to Swindon Borough Council enjoying a good relationship with the National Trust both in the development stages of the HQ and as an employer in the borough. The decision of such a prestigious organisation to base themselves in Swindon speaks volumes for what the town has to offer major businesses and companies."
