Two big dates mark a new era in health provision in Swindon. On 5 November the Swindon and Marlborough Health Care Trust took over the Great Western Hospital from builders Carillion, three years after construction started in October 1999.
Departments are now on the move from Princess Margaret Hospital, the bulk of the equipment will be installed and commissioned, staff trained and beds prepared. On 3 December the first patients will arrive. For a short time some departments will operate on dual sites but a rapid run down of PMH will take place so that all services will quickly operate from the new hospital.
swindonlink made a second visit in October to the Great Western to update the photos which appeared in March.
What patients and visitors will see at the Great Western Hospital:
The main foyer reaching five floors from earth to sky will be used by most visitors. Note the huge stained glass window by Amber Hiscott featured in the October Link.
Other entrances will give access to specialist departments. Twenty four buses an hour will pull up to the front entrance. Closeby there are 1,100 car parking spaces, the same number as PMH.
The restaurant servery will soon provide welcome refreshment to patients, staff and visitors.
Everything has been done to make children's visits to hospital as easy as possible. Great thought has been put into fun decoration - look out for pirate ships, islands and seaside scenes. Note the unusual lighting effects installed in the corridor ceilings, the dolphins on the floor and palm trees on the doors.
