Shaun's crossing ready for dedication
Awaiting completion on 17 October at Corton Crescent, David Cox and Mary After a long campaign pedestrians crossing Corton Crescent between Westlea and the West Swindon district centre have gained a higher level of safety after the completion of a controlled crossing.Final adjustments have been made and the lights were officially opened on 23 October with children from Westlea School and local councillors. A ceremony can be held to dedicate the crossing to Shaun Shirley later in November. Shaun, 13, from Toothill was knocked down on 17 January 2001 and later died of his injuries. Road safety campaigner Dawn Dolphin said parents will be pleased with the safety measures. "Hundreds of Westlea School children use the crossing every week to go to swimming lessons and parents will now be more assured. We're dedicating the site as Shaun's Crossing to remind people of the tragic loss of a child." Toothill/Westlea councillor David Cox said, "a lot of people have worked hard to make the case for the crossing - residents, Westlea School, Asda, local councillors and The Link magazine. But I would appeal to drivers to still be vigilant on Corton Crescent; it's a busy road with a blind bend." Coun Mary Martin, who also represents the area, welcomed the lights. "Common sense has prevailed and the council has delivered. Congratulations to all those who campaigned for the crossing. However, it should be pointed out that if the decision was made now, it is very unlikely the money would be reallocated. "Earlier this year the cabinet rearranged its spending plan in response to calls from the West area panel, going against officer recommendation to spend the money on the Tewkesbury Cross roundabout. The new area panel structure since May means they meet less often and has become a large group including Western, Pine-hurst, Penhill and Gorse Hill wards." |
