Nationwide Debt in Africa tour in Swindon
The photo above shows Charlotte with local members and supporters of Swindon World Development during her visit to Swindon. Chris Thackray, Secretary of Swindon World Development Movement, writes:Swindon's branch of the World Development Movement recently welcomed Charlotte from the Uganda Debt Network as part of a nationwide "Debt in Africa" tour organised jointly by WDM and the Jubilee Debt campaign. Charlotte spoke of the benefits that had been achieved in Uganda because of debt relief. A Poverty Action Fund has been established and substantial expenditure has been devoted to improving education and sanitation. Independent community-led organisatios have been closely involved in monitoring the fundıs activities to ensure that monies are properly directed at poverty reduction. However Ugandaıs debt is still unsustainable, in a country where 43% of the population live on less than $1 a day and where life expectancy at birth is only 44. People are still dying in hospital because they cannot afford the necessary medicines. Charlotte stressed that it would take both pressure from the rich and from developing countries to force the International Monetry Fund and the World Bank to speed up the debt relief process. She urged the audience to write to Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown calling him to press for further debt relief at the forthcoming IMF & World Bank meetings. Research shows that without full debt cancellation the internationally agreed Millennium Development goals of halving poverty cannot be reached. Anyone interested in campaigning on debt relief or other issues related to world poverty should contact Chris Thackray 01793 320993 or mail: lmw6@student.open.ac.uk o The World Development Movement has over 20,000 members and 100 active local groups in Britain. It works to tackle the root causes of world poverty. Through its ground-breaking campaigns it wins positive change for the worldıs poorest people. |
