The Taw-ny-Owl takes shape in North Swindon

Mark Edwards welcomes James Arkell to the Taw-ny-Owl site

Taw Hill's pub should be open by next Easter and linking the area's name and wildlife in nearby Mouldon Hill park, it's to be called the Taw-ny-Owl.

Land owners Taywood were keen to develop flats on a site originally designated for a pub at the entrance to the area, but after a residents' campaign supported by North Swindon MP Michael Wills, a deal has been struck with Arkells.

The name was announced and welcomed at the MP's surgery on 7 June. Mark Edwards, who led the campaign for the pub said residents were absolutely delighted with the decision. "We can't wait for the Taw-ny-Owl to open; it's going to bring the community together."

Brewery managing director James Arkell said he was heartened by the positive support. "The £2 million investment is a major commitment for us, but the enthusiasm from residents and Michael Wills is very encouraging."

The Taw-ny-Owl will be designed in the style of a manor farmhouse with a lounge and family area where food will be served and a public bar with games and TV screens. Upstairs will be two rooms to let, a landlord's flat and a function room.
