CBM (formerly the Christian Blind Mission) provides medical care and rehabilitation to as many blind, low vision, deaf and physically disabled people as possible in over 90 countries through a network of international offices and we are recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Dr. Yuri Zelenski MD, MPH, MPHI, former co-worker at the CBM supported Ophthalmology Department of the State University Hospital of Port-au-Prince, Haiti describes the scene as “one of the most horrifying disasters humanity has ever seen.”

Despite the extensive damage caused by the earthquake, the Ophthalmology Department of the Hospital was one of the few functioning state services providing 24 hour emergency eye services during the first few days following the disaster.

Unfortunately the ophthalmologist, Dr. Emmanuella Delaguerra, is missing, and our only hope is that she is among the survivors somewhere in the medical camp unconscious. We have been advised that her husband and younger child died.

Dr. Zelenski says “psychological, social and monetary damage is immeasurable and human loss is irreplaceable within decades. We share grief and pain with their families and friends.”   He continues, “even though, life is destroyed and our fellows are lost, our spirit is stronger than ever.  We stay united. We have not lost our capacity to act and with your help we will rebuild Haiti.”
