Teenagers set to rock North Swindon - 5 July
29/06/2009

Rock, rap and other musical talents will be on show at a community event on Sunday 5 July.

Swindon Borough Council's Underground Youth Club, based at the Oribital Shopping Centre, has organised the event in celebration of music and other artistic media, with the aim of breaking down negative perceptions of young people.

The event is being held outside Asda Walmart at the shopping centre between 11am and 5pm. In the morning there will be a display of singing and rapping from young people and adults, and the youth drama group Starz under the Stairz will be performing a variety of short plays.

A battle of the bands will take place in the afternoon, where local youth bands will pit their skills against each other in an effort to win music studio time, radio airplay, publicity coverage in a local magazine and a £100 music store voucher.

Throughout the day visitors will also be able to browse stalls. There will be face painting, t-shirt designing, arts and crafts, table top sales and a raffle.

The Underground Youth Club has worked in partnership with Swindon Rockschool and Frequency Magazine.

Cllr Garry Perkins, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, said: "This event will not only showcase the talent of young people, it will also help to break down negative perceptions of this age group and demonstrate what a positive contribution they make in society."

Anyone interested in having a stall at the event can contact youth worker Carole Anne Rapson on 07766368388.
