PCT warns of heat related health risks
With a heatwave expected to hit Swindon this week, health experts are urging people to take extra precautions.
Dr Pamela Akerman, Director of Public Health for NHS Swindon & Swindon Borough Council, warned: “Hot weather does excite some of us but we mustn’t forget the risks of heat related illnesses such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion. Extreme temperatures are especially dangerous to babies and young children, older people and those living in care homes. In worst case scenario, heatwaves can even be fatal. However, this can be prevented by taking simple precautions such as staying out of the heat, wearing cool clothing and drinking plenty of water.”

During a heatwave, try to keep out of the heat and if possible avoid strenuous activities such as sport or gardening during the hottest part of the day (11am – 3pm). Also remember to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water and fruit juice.
If your job involves laborious work, try to stay in the shade as much as possible, wear a hat and light, loose fitting clothing and drink loads of water throughout the day. It also helps to keep cool by splashing yourself several times a day with cold water, particularly your face and the back of your neck. A damp cloth or scarf on the back of the neck can also help you to stay cool.
If you do start to suffer from a headache, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, muscle weakness or cramps, pale skin and a high temperature – it is likely that you have heat exhaustion. Call NHS direct or contact your local GP for help and advice.
