Haydon Wick Parish Council Embraces No Mow May for Local Biodiversity

Haydon Wick Parish Council will be taking part in No Mow May across its parks and green spaces.

By allowing carefully selected areas to grow wild for the month, the council aims to provide vital habitat for pollinators like bees and butterflies. The carefully selected areas are away from areas that children play, dogs run or where it presents a visibility/health and safety issue.

"While we understand some residents may find the longer grass messy or unsightly at first, we're asking everyone to look at the bigger picture," said Councillor Richard Hailstone, an active member of the Wildflower, Bulbs & Trees Working Party. "This is a small sacrifice that pays huge dividends for our local environment and ecosystems. The flowers and wildlife it allows to thrive more than make up for any perceived untidiness."

Approximately 97% of flower-rich meadows have been lost since the 1930s, taking away vital food sources needed by pollinators. By leaving patches of grassy areas to grow longer this summer, native wildflowers can bloom, providing food for bees and butterflies while offering shelter for small mammals.

The council is committed to maintaining paths, play areas, and open spaces as normal. However, residents are encouraged to embrace the charm of a more natural landscape for just this one month out of the year.

"Get outside and observe the transformation happening in our open spaces during May," encouraged Councillor Hailstone. "Look for the wildflowers blooming and the insects they attract. We think you'll come to appreciate it."

No Mow May is part of Haydon Wick's broader commitment to sustainable practices that protect the natural environment. The Council welcomes feedback from the community as it works together on this initiative.
