Aldi to put North Swindon plan to public by summer

Supermarket chain Aldi is proposing to build a store next to the David Lloyd tennis centre, off Thamesdown Drive.
North Swindon councillors declared their opposition to the change of use to the site designated for a hotel in an exclusive story in the March edition of Swindon Link.
However coun Justin Tomlinson said this has been modified after a 50 - 50 reader support/opposition to the idea. “The reaction was helpful and gave us a steer when we met Aldi in March.
"They’ve assured us that their store would not compete with the convenience shop at St Andrew’s Ridge, they would come forward with a high quality design and they would carry out a full consultation with residents.”
A spokesman for Aldi said the store will only occupy about a quarter of land available next to the tennis centre. There will still be development potential for uses like a hotel and other land employment generating opportunities.
Aldi is expected to put proposals to public consultation in June or July. To send Justin Tomlinson comments, mail: justin@abbeymeadsintouch.com
