Christmas comes early for Swindon composer
Margaret Carpenter and Suzanne Bullimore with some of their young singers, from left, Esther Surender, Lucy Elliott, Polly Leech, Hannah Leech, Rebecca Martin, Amy Snook. Front, Jenny Snook Youngsters from Swindon have been singing winter songs throughout the summer heat with prolific composer Margaret Carpenter from Shaw, recording two musicals in time for schools to rehearse their own productions. One is Babushka, Margaret's sixth work to be published, where she has taken the traditional folk tale and given it a nativity twist. She and Suzanne Bullimore from Peatmoor also wrote the arrangements for The Snowman at Sunset by Niki Davies. Since moving to Swindon in 1998 Margaret has built an ensemble of local children who have recorded and performed her work. Soon after she first arrived Margaret was impressed by the singing talents of a young boy she heard at Holy Trinity Church in Shaw. The boy's mother commented that he enjoyed singing and was performing in 'Piper' at nearby Brook Field School. The mother was astonished when Margaret told her she was the composer. She was invited to the performance and was so impressed by the singing that she invited some of the children to work with her. This has since grown to a group of 15 children aged 9 to 12 years from Bradon Forest, Greendown and Catherine Wayte schools as well as Brook Field. Margaret has seen many of her musicals performed by local schools. "It is so interesting to see all the different interpretations of my music," she said. Suzanne Bullimore, music teacher at Tregoze School, assists Margaret arrange the songs for the recordings. She said, "it's amazing how much energy the children have. They were just as enthusiastic at the end of the day of singing as they were when they began." The recordings are being launched in time for schools throughout the country to use them during the autumn term ready for their own Christmas productions. The CD and musical scores are available from Out of the Arc Music, The School House, 15 Esher Green, Esher, Surrey, England KT10 8AA Tel/fax: 01932 232250 http://www.outoftheark.com/ Margaret has just launched her own website: www.mrcarpenter.btinternet.co.uk |
