Opening week of fun at Catherine Wayte School
Children at Swindon's newest primary school, Catherine Wayte School in Abbey Meads, celebrated the official opening of their school in late November with a special week of rhyme and fun. Pupils, staff, governors and Swindon education representatives watched children's poet Kit Wright plant a tree and lay a plaque on Wednesday 8 November, followed by an assembly where children recited poetry and sang nursery rhymes. Each child was presented with a signed copy of one of Kit's books. On Friday 10 November staff from W H Smith read their favourite stories to the children whilst everyone, including staff, dressed up as their favourite book character and paraded in the hall. Prizes were given for most interesting costume and best piece of poetry. Headteacher Gaye Ching, dressed as Mary Poppins, said the events had been memorable. "It was an enjoyable and exciting week which we hope children and staff will never forget."
