Landlocked town's own boat to ride the ocean waves
In barely a year Norman Butler from Benwell Close, Westlea will be in Tenerife at the starting line for the adventure of a lifetime - racing across the Atlantic in rowing boat. He started preparing over 12 months ago for the 3,000 mile race to the Caribbean sponsored by Ward Evans. All competitors have to build their own boat from a standard kit and fund their costs, whilst preparing themselves physically and mentally. Norman has built the boat and been training hard. Most recently his rowing partner had to drop out and he is now looking for another to take up the challenge. The changed situation means he has been able to rename the boat in honour of his home town 'Spirit Of Swindon.' "Having the boat named Spirit Of Swindon is a good way to thank the people in and around the town who are helping to make this a genuine team effort, one in which the whole community is increasingly sharing in," said Norman. "Things are going well with the project. Fund raising is on target and we are seeking further corporate sponsors to get to the start line on 7 October 2001. Norman, who works for National Power, is backed by fitness, nutritional and medical advisors to assist his preparation. He has also received support from Olympic champion Steve Redgrave, the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire Sir Maurice Johnson, sailors Sir Chay Blyth and Tony Bullimore. The boat is currently on display at the Science Museum Wroughton. If you could see yourself rowing the Atlantic, or can offer sponsorship, call Norman on (01793) 882198 or by e-mail: norman@benwellclose.freeserve.co.uk |
