Steps to Swindon

Swindon's Wiltshire Festival is fast gaining a reputation for landing sensational acts. Last year child soprano star Charlotte Church took the classical evening by storm, on her way to becoming one of the richest teenagers in Britain. On Sunday 27 August, Steps, the Brit Award winners of the 'Best Live Selling Act' in 1999, will headline the party in Lydiard Park. This is a change to the first advertised dates.

Festival organiser Andy Cotton said the booking line went wild in early April when the Steps web site announced the Swindon booking and GWR radio started to promote the concert.

"We had to call in extra people to work the ticket hotline. Ten per cent of the tickets sold for last year's concert were booked on the first day that GWR started publicity, it was incredible.

"Steps are huge and have chosen us as one of only three festival appearances this year. We're answering the critics who say we don't attract big acts to the Wiltshire Festival. I'm sure all 20,000 tickets will be sold."

Joining Steps will be The Vengaboys, Fierce and Esensual. Ex-Spandau ballet heart throb Tony Hadley returns after a massive set at last year's festival.

The Classical Spectacular, which will now take place on Friday 25 August, will feature the English National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jae Alexander, joined by the world renowned bass baritone Willard White and soprano Maria Kessellman. The heaven sent harmonies of special guests London Community Gospel Choir will entrance festival goers, whilst a huge fireworks display and lasers will pierce the skies above Swindon.

For the first time, festival supporters who book early will benefit from cheaper tickets: Classical Extravaganza £18 before 31 July (£20 after). Under 9s £5.

Party in the Park £19 before 31 July (£21 after). Under 9s £10.

Tickets are available from Link and Oasis centres, and Swindon Information Centre. Credit card bookings carry a booking fee and conditions apply to child tickets. The credit card hotline is open seven days a week 11am to 9pm: 01285 862858.

The Wiltshire Festival is sponsored by Motorola, GWRfm, Classicfm and NTL, supported by DeVere Hotels, Swindon Council, Newscom and The Link magazine
