Swindon stars on stage at SwinDome day
Months of planning and rehearsals came together in a great display of creativity when singers, dancers and artwork showed off the talents of the town's young people at the Millennium Dome on 4 April. The town's railway history and the idea of journeys and travelling through time were the underlying theme for the presentations at the Our Town zone sponsored by McDonalds. On stage 40 members of Swindon Young Musicians Young Voices aged 7 to fourteen sang a specially composed cantata entitled Steam, which told the story of Swindon's role in the national rail network.
Against a backdrop of fast edited video images of Swindon and its surrounds, a graffiti backdrop and a model of the town hall clocktower, teenagers from Swindon Dance presented an evocative impression of the town's railway past, present and future. Outside the Our Town theatre decorated suitcases containing artwork by children from thirteen primary schools on the journey theme, were displayed. Swindon South MP Julia Drown said: "it was a fantastic day; the young people showed off Swindon at its best. The dance, the singing and the artwork were a real spectacle." The performances and the artwork will be on display when STEAM, Swindon's new railway heritage centre opens in June.
