New information lifeline launched

Are you looking for a childminder, searching for a primary school or simply trying to organise your child's social life? A new free service has is now available to help you.

By making just one telephone call, parents, carers and children themselves will be able to access a wealth of information about child related services from a new project managed by Trio Childcare Connections. They will hold lists, contact numbers and data covering childcare, schools, facilities for children with disabilities, clubs and social activities.

Aimed at 0 to 14 year olds, the telephone line is open from 9.30am to 5pm daily. Callers outside these times will be able to leave a message on an answer machine.

Free information guides are also available on care for your child, such as choosing a childminder, playgroup or holiday playscheme. Once established, more leaflets will be published on learning difficulties, health issues and family support.

In line with government strategy, to have a children's information service in every local authority, Swindon Council have provided funding for this initiative through the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership.

Project Director, Gerry Gardner explained, "we intend to create a one-stop-shop for parents by providing a central contact point for children's information. Older children may also want to use the service for themselves."

Although at first it will be mainly about childcare, the three project team members plan to gather and provide information relevant to families on a wide range of issues, as well as social and sporting activities.

Annette Palmer, Project Manager said the service is long overdue. "The team are extremely excited about it. We are really looking forward to taking calls and would stress it is definitely a two way process, we would like to know what our clients needs are so that we can endeavour to meet them."

The Swindon service is up and running two months in advance of a national launch when all Childrens Information Services will be linked together via the internet.

The Children's Information Service enquiry line: (01793) 541786.
