Giving disability style

Dressability is an innovative Swindon based charity group helping disabled and elderly people who find clothes and dressing a problem. Thanks to a £103,500 lottery grant it can now operate on a full time basis.

The scheme, set up in 1998, adapts clothing and where necessary produces custom-made items designed for specific disabilities.

Volunteer and clothing advisor Sian Barry said, "I can't put into words what I felt when we heard we had got the grant, I'm excited and really pleased. We will be able to reach and help more people, which is so important because if you can't dress yourself, you stay in bed."

Clients do not have to be registered disabled to benefit from the help on offer. Many elderly people who have difficulty using their hands are able to have clothes adjusted with velcro and a bit of design ingenuity to help them wear old favourites again. A tie can be adapted to clip on easily. People in wheelchairs often need items of clothing adjusted to meet their specific needs. Temporary disability can also be catered for such as an aid to help someone with a broken leg pull on a sock.

The lottery award means the service can be taken out to the homes of more disabled people, who often have difficulty getting out and about. There are plans to publicise the service more widely, operate on a full time basis and find a more permanent workshop.

Sian explained, "we will be able to make alterations more quickly and research into garments which accommodate specific difficulties."
