Mobile phone business backs school projects

Swindon based mobile phone company Cellular Operations has donated £1,500 to help Peatmoor

Community School develop its grounds into an environmental classroom. And company staff are going to help out as well.

The company has struck up a strong relationship with the school in advance of moving into its futuristic glass building next to Peatmoor Lagoon during Christmas week.

Presenting a cheque at a school assembly, managing director Nigel Bunter said, "it is a privilege to be working so closely with the school. The donation will help develop the grounds, but just as important is that fifty of our staff have offered to get involved where they are asked to."

Peatmoor headteacher Terri Peacock agreed. "There are many areas in which the company can help us, from wiring up computers to helping run sports events and reading with children, as well as practical activities like planting trees and taking part in our community arts project. This link-up is very exciting."

Mr Bunter invited the children to tour the Cellular Operations call centre early in the new year.

·Cafe of controversy

A proposal by Cellular Operations to build and manage a cafe next to Peatmoor Lagoon is being considered by planners at Swindon Council, alongside objections from local residents and the community association who believe it would spoil the character of the lake.

Cellular Operations MD Nigel Bunter said the company had offered to create a public amenity between the new company HQ and the lagoon after discussion with council officers.
