The World is Not Enough for Swindon

Look out for Swindon's high tech £82 million Motorola mobile phone factory in the new James Bond spectacular 'The World is Not Enough.' It masquerades as the headquarters for a Turkish oil company.

Also watch out for Perry Dyson from Freshbrook, Swindon. The handsome, bronzed Motorola employee plays a security guard.

The scenes of sunny summertime Turkey had to be imagined as chilly winds and the occasional snow flurry swept across the Motorola grounds when shooting took place on 5 March 1999. Mud underfoot did not deter the well wrapped crew of around150, whilst a tanned and immaculately turned out Pierce Brosnan, in his third movie as Bond, went through his paces, which lasted all of 30 seconds for each take.

M played by Dame Judy Dench was also on the set for a couple of shots outside Motorola building, which was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in November last year.

Greed, revenge, world domination through the power of oil, high-tech terrorism are some of the ingredients of the film which opens with scenes of the remarkable Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Taking in a high-speed boat chase up London's River Thames ending at London's spectacular Millennium Dome, the Scottish highlands, an avalanche in the French Alps, the Caspian Sea in Azerbaijan and the Cappodocia plateau in Turkey, Bond has to try and protect the villain Elektra - Sophie Morceau - the daughter of murdered old magnate Sir Robert King, played by David Calder.

In an exciting adventure, full of exciting twists, turns and the usual witty moments, Bond ends up in Turkey on the trail of international terrorist Renard - Robert Carlyle - whose evil plan to destroy the world is foiled in the claustrophopic confines of a nuclear submarine beneath the surface of the Bosphorus, just in the nick of time as usual.

As usual, new technology features in the film including the world's smallest mobile phone which is made by Motorola.

Swindon featured in the 1984 Bond movie when the Norman Foster designed Renault UK distribution centre was used as a backdrop for 'A View to A Kill' starring Roger Moore.
