Swindon's Bus Company is taking the opportunity to highlight its commitment to supporting passengers who have dementia.
The firm is marking Dementia Action Week from May 13 to May 19 by putting the spotlight on the many steps they have taken to make their buses more accesible to the most vulnerable passengers.
For people living with dementia, the region's bus service provides a vital lifeline by giving access to local shops and amenities as well as healthcare services.
Swindon's Bus company's head of communications, Nikki Honer, said: “Dementia Action Week is an excellent time to highlight the work we carry out to ensure our entire team is fully aware of the special requirements many of our customers have. My colleagues are dedicated to making those passengers’ journeys as comfortable and stress-free as possible."
All drivers are trained as Dementia Friends as part of the company's Accessible Travel for All course, which is not only delivered upon drivers' initial training but is part of their ongoing development curriculum.
In addition, the company ensures all their new buses are designed with light-coloured flooring as many people with dementia fear dark spaces.
Nikki Honer added: “It is about ensuring all our customers receive excellent service, no matter what they are having to deal with elsewhere.
“We hope our dementia friendly ethos helps ensure our services in-and-around Swindon are accessible to all.”
